Lloyd’s Register, a leading provider of classification and compliance services to the marine and offshore industries, required a flexible lifting solution for general workshop use. As the building was leased, a permanent fixed lifting system was not a viable option, making a modular and portable gantry the most suitable choice. The gantry needed to accommodate a wide variety of components handled within the workshop while remaining easy to assemble and relocate as required. In addition, the solution had to support a substantial safe working load of 2 tonnes, which is significant for a modular gantry system, while maintaining safety, usability and compliance with operational standards.
One of the key challenges was designing the gantry to a bespoke height in order to clear existing obstructions within the workshop environment. This required careful consideration to ensure full functionality without compromising safety or performance. Another challenge was improving operational efficiency and safety by managing power cables effectively. Traditional setups can result in trailing cables across the floor, introducing potential trip hazards. Additionally, while hoists typically use powered vertical lifting with manual horizontal travel, Lloyd’s Register required a more refined solution that could support future motorisation to suit their handling needs and workload.
Hoist UK designed and supplied a bespoke mobile modular gantry tailored specifically to Lloyd’s Register’s workshop requirements. The system incorporated a unique spring-loaded cable reeling drum, allowing the extended reel to retract neatly and eliminating loose cables across the floor. A Verlinde M-range hoist was specified, providing a safe working load of 2 tonnes and allowing for future motorisation of horizontal travel if required.
Once the custom design was finalised, detailed drawings were issued for customer approval prior to manufacture, ensuring complete confidence in the solution. The finished gantry now provides Lloyd’s Register with a highly effective, safe and adaptable lifting system that supports their operations while offering the flexibility demanded by a leased facility.
"This project is a great example of how bespoke design and engineering can deliver safe, flexible lifting solutions without compromise, even in challenging environments."
