The National Theatre required a lifting system capable of operating seamlessly across two separate performance areas within a unique and demanding space. The system needed to allow flexible movement between both areas while meeting the strict safety and operational requirements of the entertainment industry. In addition, the equipment had to integrate discreetly into the theatre environment, both visually and functionally, without compromising safety or performance.
Hoist UK designed and supplied a bespoke latching crane system incorporating monorails to enable smooth, fluid movement across both areas. A transfer beam was installed, allowing all four hoists to be repositioned easily between different sections as required. The hoists selected were an industrial version of the Verlinde Stagemaker, specifically suited to the entertainment sector, featuring double brakes and an enhanced industrial safety factor.
Although rated as a 1-tonne system, the working load was reduced to 500kg, providing a significant safety margin and ensuring maximum reliability during operation. A wireless radio tandem control system was integrated, enabling multiple hoists to be selected and operated simultaneously - ideal for synchronised lifts and complex stage set movements. To meet the theatre’s aesthetic requirements, the entire system was finished in a custom black RAL colour to blend seamlessly with the surrounding stage environment.
The completed system delivers a safe, flexible and visually unobtrusive lifting solution perfectly suited to the National Theatre’s operational needs. The inclusion of a hand chain wheel for manual crane travel provides a cost-effective and practical solution, particularly well suited to applications where the system is not in constant use.
The bespoke design allows precise control, enhanced safety and reliable performance, supporting the efficient handling of complex stage settings while maintaining the high standards required in a live performance environment.
