The Challenge

The restricted headroom within the room meant that a non-standard jib crane was required to ensure that the maximum available lifting height was achieved.

Maximising the height of the jib crane in the room, resulted in tight installation tolerances, requiring careful considering and planning from Hoist UK’s team prior to attending site to ensure the installation could be carried out safely and effectively.

The jib crane was positioned very close to a wall and unrestricted 270° slewing would have resulted in contact with the building. This required careful consideration during design.

The Solution

Hoist UK designed, manufactured and installed a freestanding jib crane with a custom overall height of 2.766 m. The jib crane was specified as an underbraced configuration to maximise the available lifting height within the room and was supplied with a 3 m span.

The jib crane was fixed to the existing floor slab with resin anchors and was supplied with a VX5 electric chain hoist fitted with a push travel trolley and flat cable festoon power feeding system. The hoist was supplied with dual hoisting speeds of 4 & 1 metres per minute and a cabled control pendant.

An adjustable slew stop was supplied and set on site to prevent the jib arm from contacting the adjacent wall, ensuring controlled operation within the restricted space and eliminating the risk of any damage to the equipment or the building.

The jib crane was prepared in-house prior to dispatch with Hoist UK’s standard electrical kit. The standard electrical kit includes a mains isolator switch mounted to the front of the stanchion, power supply cable which routed inside the column through cable gland entry and exit points, terminated into a junction box which connects the flat cable power feeding system, providing a neat and integrated electrical solution. Following installation, the jib crane was proof load tested to verify the installation to the existing floor slab was safe and correct.

James Jordan, General Manager

“This project really highlights Hoist UK’s in-house design and manufacturing capabilities. The customer was able to come to us for a solution that was specifically engineered to suit their space rather than having to select from a standard range and lose out on valuable lifting height."
